Recording to a USB drive

With a USB drive plugged in, every Take is written twice at the same time: the Device Copy on your iPhone or iPad, and the Drive Copy on the drive. Neither one is the primary. If one stops, the other keeps recording.

Choose the Drive folder

  1. Plug the drive into your hub.
  2. Tap the gear to open Settings.
  3. Under Storage, tap Choose Drive Folder… and pick a folder on the drive.

Settings now shows the drive's name and free space, and the time left on the Device and the Drive. To use a different folder, tap Change Drive Folder…. The Drive folder can't be changed during a Take.

Each Show gets its own folder inside the Drive folder, laid out the same way as on the Device. See Opening a Show in your DAW.

On the record screen

The Drive chip shows the recording time left on the drive. Other states:

  • Drive not set: no Drive folder chosen. Takes go to the Device only.
  • Drive missing: the Drive folder isn't available. Connect the drive, or choose the folder again.
  • Drive stopped: the drive stopped during a Take.

If the drive isn't there when you press record, the Take records to the Device only and the screen says so.

If the drive is unplugged during a Take

The Take keeps recording on the Device. The screen says the Drive stopped and the Gap will be Repaired when it comes back. Tap Check Drive after you plug it back in.

When the drive is back, ShowRecorder starts writing to it again. The part it missed is a Gap in the Drive Copy, held as silence so every file stays the same length.

Repair

After the Take ends, ShowRecorder fills each Gap from the other Copy. This is Repair, and it happens on its own. The record screen then tells you how each Copy ended up, for example "Drive copy: Repaired".

Repair works both ways: if the Device stopped writing and the Drive kept going, the Device Copy is filled from the Drive.

Freeing space on the Device

To keep a Show only on the drive, open Shows, swipe the Show and tap Delete…, then under Delete from turn on Device copy only. ShowRecorder deletes the Device copy only after Check the Drive copy confirms every Take and channel is on the drive with the same audio and no Gaps.

If the folder can't be written to, see Troubleshooting.
