Getting started
After this guide you'll have recorded a Take with one file per USB Channel on your iPhone or iPad.
What you need
- A mixer. A Behringer X Air XR18 or MR18 gives you 18 USB Channels with names and colors. Other class-compliant USB audio interfaces record too, without names.
- An iPhone or iPad. A USB-C iPhone (iPhone 15 or later) or an iPad, on iOS or iPadOS 26.
- A powered USB-C hub (recommended), so the phone charges while the mixer and a drive are plugged in.
- Storage. About 9.3 GB per hour for 18 channels at 48 kHz. A USB drive is optional.
Plug in
- Connect the mixer's USB cable to your iPhone or iPad, directly or through the hub.
- Open ShowRecorder. Allow microphone access when asked: the app needs it to record the USB audio.
- The meters come alive. ShowRecorder is Armed on the mixer and ready to record.
The first time you open the app, it offers the 14-day Trial. Tap Not now to skip it; it stays available in Settings > Pro.
If the meters stay empty, see Connecting an XR18 or MR18.
Record your first Take
- Press the red Record button. The Take starts with the Pre-roll, the seconds before your press.
- Tap the flag to add a Marker at a song or a moment.
- Press the square to stop. ShowRecorder asks first: tap Stop Take to end it, or Keep Going to carry on.
Your first press of record starts a Show, named with today's date. Each press after that adds the next Take to the same Show. To name a Show or start a new one, tap the Show line above the Record button.
Find your files
Tap Shows on the record screen to see each Show, its Takes and its Markers. The same folders are in the Files app under On My iPhone > ShowRecorder > Shows (or On My iPad). See Opening a Show in your DAW.
Before the next show
- Link the mixer to get channel names on your files: Mixer Link.
- Add a USB drive for a second Copy: Recording to a USB drive.
- Check the whole rig in 30 seconds with Settings > Run Soundcheck. It tests the Mixer Link, the USB Channels, every Copy and the files.
